Our Story
PART OF THE COMMUNITYNumber 11 Central Arcade has a long history for the residents of Saffron Walden and has become an integral part of our community and daily lives.
This site has been a cafe since 1964. On 16 November 1970, Tony Slade took over the property from John and Sally Hill, transforming it into the Diner we know today, and it has been independent and family-run ever since.
Many customers remember the jukebox, fruit machines, and the pool table upstairs, which provided many hours of entertainment (and distractions for school kids!).
After 54 wonderful years in the Slade family, ownership changed hands to the Ketteridge-Tan family in January 2025.
We are committed to maintaining the Mocha Diner as a beloved Saffron Walden institution and being a place to share new memories across the generations in our town.
Supporting Local Businesses
We love buying local and are proud to source ingredients from local Saffron Walden businesses. Supporting the Mocha means supporting our local community as well.

His son, Brian, took over the business, which soon grew and in 1984, moved to the centre of Saffron Walden.
